Simple, effective tips to protect and pamper in cold weather — friendly advice from Dr. Keerthana Kalva.
Why winter is tough on lips & hands
Cold air, low humidity and indoor heating strip skin of natural oils. Lips have thin skin and no oil glands — so they chap quickly. Hands are exposed and washed more often, so they lose moisture and become irritated.
Daily Lip Care
Keep it gentle: Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic lip balm with occlusives like petrolatum or lanolin.
Layer wisely: Apply balm before going outside and reapply after eating or drinking.
Night repair: Use a thicker balm or overnight lip mask to help restoration while you sleep.
Skip harsh scrubs: Avoid aggressive exfoliation — a soft wipe or balm-based exfoliant is enough.
Daily Hand Care
Moisturise often: Choose a cream (not just lotion) with glycerin, ceramides, shea or urea for daytime protection.
After washing: Pat hands dry and apply moisturizer within 1 minute to lock in water.
Overnight repair: Apply a generous layer of cream and wear cotton gloves to boost absorption.
Barrier boost: If hands are cracked, use an occlusive ointment at night and avoid irritants (strong detergents).
Helpful Ingredients
Look for these in labels — they help hydrate, repair and protect:
Occlusives: Petrolatum, dimethicone — lock moisture in.
Humectants: Glycerin, hyaluronic acid — draw water to the skin.
Repairers: Ceramides, niacinamide — rebuild the skin barrier.
Exfoliants (hands only): Low concentration urea to soften thick areas (use as directed).
Sun & Weather Protection
Winter sun and reflection can still damage skin. Use a lip balm with SPF 15+ for outdoor activities, and apply sunscreen to the back of the hands if exposed.
When to See a Dermatologist
Persistent cracks, bleeding or signs of infection (pus, spreading redness).
Severe pain, deep fissures or when over-the-counter care doesn't help.
Sudden rash or allergic reaction after using a new product.
Simple Winter Routine
Morning: gentle cleanser for hands, moisturiser, lip balm with SPF if outdoors.
Day: reapply lip balm after meals; moisturise hands after each wash.
Night: thicker cream or ointment for hands; occlusive lip treatment for lips.
