Laser Hair Reduction

Traditional methods such as waxing, plucking, and shaving for removing unwanted hair are painful and effective for the short term only. Laser hair reduction is an advanced method that eliminates the need to perform waxing, shaving, and tweezing to get rid of unwanted body hair. Laser hair reduction has also reduced the chances of irritation and inflammation that occur due to shaving, waxing, and other hair removal methods, and the results are also long-lasting.

This treatment is nowadays the most popular cosmetic procedure performed to remove unwanted hair from the body areas such as the face, legs, arms, bikini line, and underarms. The laser hair reduction methods work by removing the hair through using a selective photothermolysis mechanism in which laser targets the melanin pigment present in the hair follicle. In this procedure, the light energy of a specific wavelength is absorbed by the pigment present in the hair roots that stimulates rapid heating and subsequently destroys regenerative structures of the hair follicle. This treatment precisely focuses on the dark and coarse hair without causing any damage to the surrounding skin. This treatment is fast, effective, and painless. It requires about 4 to 8 sessions to deliver the optimum results.

In the following body areas the lasers work effectively to significantly reduce unwanted body hair:

  • Shoulders
  • Legs
  • Face (upper lip area, forehead, and chin)
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Bikini area
  • Back
  • Breast
  • Thighs
  • Underarms

Preparation before laser hair reduction treatment

  • Before¬†undergoing laser procedure, one should consult with an expert dermatologist or laser skin specialist.
  • One should discuss the costs, possible risks, and expected results.
  • The doctor studies the patient's medical history and also decides whether one is an ideal candidate for laser treatment.
  • Shaving can be performed before laser treatment as it leaves the hair follicle intact to the surface. So that the lasers can easily target the hair follicles.

Pre-treatment care

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunscreen daily 6-8 weeks prior to the treatment.
  • Stop performing traditional ways of hair removal such as waxing, plucking, epilating 4 weeks prior to the treatment. As they remove the hair follicles and there will be no target left for the laser hair reduction machines to work.
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications and antibiotics before this treatment.
  • Do not use self-tanner for 2 to 3 weeks before the treatment.

Ideal candidates for laser hair reduction

  • People with dark hair and light skin tone are the best candidates for laser hair reduction treatment. However, effective results can be seen in people with dark skin tone and light hair.¬†
  • Have a realistic expectation with the treatment.
  • People who have fine hair can also get great results with this treatment.
  • People who have a medical history of psoriasis, eczema, and autoimmune diseases are not ideal candidates for this treatment.
  • This treatment is not appropriate for pregnant and lactating women.
  • This procedure is now also appropriate and safe for people with dark skin tone due to advancement in laser technology.
  • Must be above 18 years of age.
  • Both men and women.

Types of Lasers used

1. Alexandrite laser (755nm)

This laser device effectively removes unwanted body hair. These lasers enable fast process and hence are preferred to treat larger body surface areas such as chest and back. This is because of the large laser spot size, as this method uses a longer wavelength of 755nm. This method is best for treating thinner hair and is effective for people with light skin and dark hair (due to targeted damage caused to the dark melanin present in the skin).

This method is not appropriate for people with darker or tanned skin color because this device targets dark pigment. Desired results can be obtained in 4 to 6 or more sessions.

Benefits

  • Time saving.
  • This is an effective technique for laser hair reduction.
  • This method is also effective for sun-damaged skin and pigmentation problems such as liver spots, freckles, age spots, and lentigines.

Procedure
Alexandrite laser involves a process of targeting and heating pigment of the hair follicle through a laser beam of 755nm fluency. These lasers target the follicles, and they are effectively destroyed, and hair gets permanently removed (for a certain amount of time period) from the skin.

The targeted area is cleaned, and then a numbing cream is applied. Then the area to be treated is shaved so that the lasers only target the hair follicles. A beam of light is emitted through this device that penetrates the skin and targets the hair follicle and gets absorbed. Then laser energy stimulates the healing process to destroy the follicle without damaging the surrounding skin area. Dynamic cooling is also provided to the skin to protect it against the heat.

2. Diode laser (810nm)

This method uses a light beam of a narrow spectrum that targets the specific pigment of the skin. This method uses a diode laser of 810nm wavelength that penetrates deep inside the skin and absorbs through melanin of the skin. These characteristics of diode laser make this method the most appropriate hair reduction. This method is safe and effective for all skin and hair types. This method is appropriate for people with light to tan skin. This method is effective for treating wider skin areas in less time. People who want to remove the hair of the back and chest can go for this method.

Procedure
The targeted area is cleaned, and then a numbing cream is applied. Then the area to be treated is shaved so that the lasers only target the hair follicles. Then the laser is moved over the targeted area. As the laser uses a selective photothermolysis mechanism in which laser mainly focuses on the hair follicles. The laser beam emitted from the diode produces heat that damages the hair follicles without damaging the surrounding area. This disrupts the growth and regeneration of the hair. This method also uses a cooling technology to improve its efficacy, and it makes this method safe and comfortable for the patients.

Benefits

  • Short recovery time.
  • It is an advanced innovative laser technique.
  • As it allows deeper penetration, it targets only the hair follicles and avoids the melanin present in the skin epidermis.
  • Long-wavelength protect the skin from damage and pigmentation changes.
  • Works best on dark coarse hair, so it is a good option for removing back and bikini hair.
  • This method uses a longer wavelength to reduce the risk of epidermal damage.
  • This method involves rapid sessions to reduce the duration of treatment.
  • This method is more effective for coarse hair than other methods.

Aftercare

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Apply sunscreen and protect the treated area from humidity, direct sun, and tanning.
  • Avoid waxing or plucking the treated area before and after the session.
  • Use moisturizer or a cool compress to overcome discomfort.
  • Avoid gym and sauna for a few days after the treatment.
  • Do not perform any type of exfoliation in the treated area.
  • Eat a healthy and nutritious diet.
  • Do not take a hot shower for a day after the treatment.
  • Avoid chemical peel in the treated area for about 2 weeks after the treatment.

3. Quadruple Laser

Quadruple Laser is the most advanced technique for laser for hair removal, featuring ground breaking technology with proven success across Germany, Spain and USA. It brings together portability and power with feather like hand-piece which results into no burns. So, it is a safe & painless treatment.
Another advantage of this laser is MILESMAN COMPACT BLEND which means it consists of 4 wavelengths (755, 810, 940 & 1064nm). It has in-motion technology and VCSEL technology - the most advanced in the hair removal laser.
Last but definitely not the least, Quadruple Laser takes care of all depths of hair giving a completely smooth skin and no ingrown hair.
